Spam phone number lookup: how to read a live complaint record

Spam phone number lookup is how you check one number against recent complaints before you answer, block, or route the call.

A random spam score does not tell you that. A score can stay high after a campaign dies. It can stay low on the first day a new campaign starts. What you need is the complaint itself: the number in +E.164, the subject, the date, and whether a recorded message was used.

What a live record contains

On 19 September 2026 the US daily feed held 1,005 complaints and was still taking new rows. The first page of that feed (500 rows) broke down like this:

128 of those 500 rows were marked as a recorded message or robocall. That is about one in four. The rest were live voice or unmarked.

Most rows were one complaint per number. That is normal on a daily file. A number becomes useful for blocking when more people report it, or when the same subject repeats.

Impersonation is the row to treat first. Hang-ups are often probes. A warranty pitch is usually a campaign, not a one-off. Read the subject before you set a policy for the whole prefix.

The 202 prefix showed up 14 times on that first page, more than any other US area code. 469 (Dallas) and 615 (Nashville) were next.

How to run a spam phone number lookup

1. Write the number in +E.164. Drop spaces and local formatting. 888-357-8668 becomes +18883578668.
2. Search the public who called page, or call GET /api/lookup/{phone}.
3. Read the complaint count, the subjects, and the dates. Ignore a score if you cannot see those three fields.
4. If you run a network, copy the number into your block list only when the record is fresh. The public feed keeps 15 days. Older noise drops out.

A spam phone number lookup that cannot show the date is not a lookup. It is a label.

What this does not prove

A complaint is a report from a person. It is not proof of who originated the call. Spoofed caller ID is common. A clean number can still be a first-day campaign. A flagged number can be a reused DID.
